In a NYT column today titled Dudgeons and Dragons, Maureen Dowd lamented Presidential candidate Howard Dean's lack of mythical arc, but I believe she has simply missed seeing it. His hero story runs like this. Beginning life somewhat privileged, Dean left a career managing investments and assets to seek one managing the health of individuals. As a physician he served rural Vermonters. Still seeking ways to contribute on a larger scale he served in Vermont's legislature and as the state's Lt. Governor. He did not hesitate to leave his practice to serve as Governor when duty called unexpectedly. Finding success there he continued, successfully serving five terms. This lifelong quest for contribution to society, to our country is as much a heroic quest as any I've seen. Best of all, his mythical arc is one based on reality. And on that anger myth... when will the pundits in this country realize that anger can be constructive as well as destructive. Any anger you see in anybody's campaign right now is righteous indignation. It is the normal reaction when basic principles of honesty, integrity and justice are threatened.
